The technology is heading towards a new phase at a rapid pace. In recent years, gaming industry has come up as one of the most brilliantly booming and upgrading stream. Today, in the year 2018, gaming industry is around a huge 138 Billion Dollar industry. This includes revenues from the countries around the globe for both game developers and the game players. The other major contributors include the advanced gaming technologies, such as Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality.
“Basically, Augmented Reality is the super imposition of digitally created environment onto the real environment, which can be seen through a dedicated device.”
Whereas, Virtual Reality is an entirely different world in itself without any existence of the real environment.
The Evolution of Augmented Reality
Augmented reality is not a new term, in fact it has it is in existence since the beginning of 1900s.
In the year 1901, L. Frank Baum, an author, first gave an idea of having some kind of electronic spectacles, that could overlay data onto the real world. He named this as ‘ Character Marker’.
Later, between 1957-1962, Morton Heilig, a cinematographer, created a simulator called Sensorama having visuals, sound, vibration, and smell and finally got it patent.
Further, Ivan Sutherland invented the Head Mounted Display in 1968. After this, many slow and modular enhancements came into being. Finally, the first ever Augmented Reality system was developed at US Air Force laboratory named ‘Armstrong’ in the year 1992. The year 1999, was a big breakthrough, when Hirokazu Kato created the ARToolKit and now came the first AR app named ARQuake by Bruce H Thomas in the year 2000. This was the time of Augmented Reality actually coming into the real world for infinite areas of its application.
Later, the AR systems were included in development for entertainment, gaming, business, industrial use, education and many other domains. Today, AR is updated with the latest Digital Lightfield technology

The development of Augmented Reality apps needs to be very accurate and user friendly. Inorder to create Augmented reality application, there is a strict need to take care of the following:
1. The Environment: It is the end user’s actual surroundings, that are a part of AR system It is this spatial space, that will get the digital Ar world superimposed. It is very important for the designers to understand all these scenarios and design accordingly.
2. User Interaction Design: This design revolves around the augmented reality technology that includes user’s interaction Interaction with the real world environment, while using the Augmented Reality application. It is important for the designers to consider the usability scenarios and give end users a friendly interface for interaction.
3. Visual design: This is the actual design of the application that engages user. It is important for augmented reality developers to use visual cues and give users a clear vision on how to use, navigate and interact with the application. Moreover, there must be a clear differentiation between the 2D and 3D objects for the user.
Today AR is an integral part of almost all the streams and many augmented reality apps are being frequently used by all. AR applications are helping in medical simulations, product designs, anxiety cures, Trainings and many other purposes. The present day scenario predicts that the future will have lot more for Augmented Reality.
